Gray Whales Are Dying on the Oregon Coast
Found on the Umpqua beach
On our recent trip to the Oregon coast, a local friend of ours told us about a dead whale she saw on the beach. Because our RV park was so close, we planned a visit the next morning. As we walked the beach someone in a work truck had stopped by the whale. He turned out to be an OSU scientist. In talking with him, he said he initially thought the whale was a juvenile, but upon taking a few measurements he realized it was actually an emaciated adult. He said that the whale likely died from starvation.
Later while walking another area we talked with some local residents who told us that the food sources for many ocean animals along the Oregon coast is rapidly dwindling, and many animals are suffering.
