Backpacking Revett Lake
A Memorable Father/Son Outing
Backpacking Revett lake had been a sort of “bucket list” item for my son and I. It’s funny how kids have plenty of time when they are young, but when they grow up their time is quite limited – reminds me of “The Cats in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin.
A prior post outlined a hike to the lake with my sweetheart. This time, which was a couple of days earlier was with my son, and we spent the night in a tent on the edge of Revett lake. On the docket was fishing, eating fresh fish, and of course, good conversation.
There are many mountain lakes in North Idaho, many of the easily accessible. Our family has always enjoyed exploring the back country of our area and we have many stories of how it was. Unfortunately, the abuse of the areas by folks has often spoiled the experience resulting in the Forest Service limiting access. For example, a lake in the mountains above the Sunshine mine was one of my favorites 30 years ago, but an article had appeared in the Spokesman Review about the lake, which caused a flood of new visitors. Not long after I went there to find trash and dirty diapers thrown in the tops of bushes. I tried again several times, but have not been back in over two decades. I am concerned that the same will happen to other places I enjoy.
On to more pleasant things, enjoy the outdoors, but please leave no trace.
