Silver Valley Nordic
Cross country skiing the Silver Valley
Silver Valley nordic was the plan for the day. We wanted to do more cross country skiing today so we decided to head to the Silver Valley. First we went through Smelterville, then Kellog, but did not find what we wanted. Further up the freeway we went to the Big Creek exit and found The Shont trailhead on The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes.
The Shont trail is very good for beginners
We have been cross country skiing for quite a few years but still consider ourselves beginners. Because we’re old we fear falling down when skiing down inclines!. The Shont trail is falt the entire way, and we were the only people skiing. It was not groomed for cross country skiing, but Cheri did a great job trail blazing, and we managed to ski up to Osburn before we turned around.
Trail conditions
The texture of the snow was perfect for trail blazing; not too fluffy so you sink down, and not too tight so you cannot make tracks. The snow was light and fluffy as it fell, and all in all, it was an excellent day.
